Memorial Day in Florida

Sunday, May 30, 2010 at 02:21PM

This weekend we honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and the American ideals articulated to eloquently and established at such a great cost by our founding fathers.

Millions of Americans will commemorate this occasion with prayer, parades and other events memorializing our fallen at places such as Arlington National Cemetery outside of Washington, D.C.  This hallowed ground as well as others throughout the United States will be a focal point of remembrance for those men and women and their families who courageously and proudly served our country.

In Florida, we have the Florida National Cemetery, a little known facility established in 1983 near Bushnell in Sumter County.  The cemetery is situated in a picturesque part of the Withlacoochie State Forest.  It features a Memorial Pathway that is lined with a variety of memorials that honor America's veterans.  As of 2003, there were 47 such memorials at the cemetery, most commemorating soldiers and veterans of 20th century conflicts.
